Our primary focus is the airway and we always screen for physical obstructions that can contribute to dysfunction. Enlarged tonsils (and adenoids which you cannot see) can reduce the airway space and this can impact on function. In our initial consultation we look at the size of the tonsils in conjunction with symptom presentation. Some symptoms of concern include snoring, heavy breathing or pauses in breathing during sleep, dark circles under the eyes, difficulty concentrating, poor behaviour, bedwetting and severe tooth wear. We are not specialists in this area so we recommend getting a referral to an Ear Nose and Throat Specialist (ENT) through your Dentist or General Medical Practitioner for a proper assessment. Your ENT will complete a full assessment and at times surgery is warranted. This is super important as we cannot restore function if the airway is compromised. However, what we can do is restore good function after surgery if it is required. We can also provide a non-invasive approach to improving function for those cases where surgery is not required. Professor David McIntosh is an ENT Specialist and this short video explains more...
