Kids sleep and breathing Online
Ages 3-6 years

Snoring is not cute, it is dangerous! Research shows that snoring effects brain development. Yes, it affects how well the brain grows and is linked to poor concentration, memory and learning. There is a strong correlation to ADHD, mood and behaviour. Did you know that growth hormone is released in the deeper stages of sleep? Snoring, loud breathing and chronic mouth breathing in children deserves our attention. Snoring is on the spectrum of sleep breathing disorders which should be addressed early. Normal breathing means lips closed, silent breathing and minimal movement through the night. Snoring, loud breathing, mouth breathing, tooth grinding, restlessness, prolonged bedwetting, excessive sweating, sleeping with neck hyper extended are all signs of some level of difficulty breathing during sleep. The term, ‘simple snoring’ is becoming an out-dated term, especially in children. It is a red flag that something is not right. We must not ignore this problem
This program is for our children who snore and need help. I speak with parents all the time who are facing this issue. After years of experience, I’ve developed a program that addresses this issue head on. The first step is usually a thorough airway assessment by a pediatric Ear Nose and Throat Specialist. They can assess for any medical issues that require management. Keep reading to find out more.
A common story I hear is, “my child had their tonsils and adenoids removed but they still snore, the surgery didn’t work.” Well, if this is you, then this program is perfect for you. This type of surgery is really important to address any physical obstruction in your child’s airway. What can happen, is that your child has adapted their breathing to counteract this blockage, and the altered breathing pattern remains post-surgery. This program is designed to restore healthy breathing back to normal. It is the missing link to full rehabilitation for deeper, restful sleep. It can be compared to a rehabilitation program after any kind of surgical intervention (such as a knee or hip replacement where muscle treatment, training and strengthening promotes healing and function).

This is not a full myofunctional therapy program. It is about restoring nasal breathing and lip seal only. However, nasal breathing is the absolute first goal in any therapy program and it is a great place to start.
Meet Dr David McIntosh, one of Australia's best pediatric Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists. In this video he explains more about the role of myofunctional therapy in addressing sleep disordered breathing.

NEVER SEEN AN EAR, NOSE and THROAT SPECIALIST?
Let's explore this issue a little deeper so you can decide your next best step.

Please understand that this does not necessarily mean ENT surgery. It is not uncommon that your doctor may prescribe some allergy medication or find other contributing factors that can be controlled without surgery. The best-case scenario after an airway assessment is that there is nothing to worry about and you can join the online program to get results. Worst case scenario is that your medical professional finds a serious airway obstruction, can fix the issue, which in turn means you have received the treatment you need (also best-case scenario).
How do I get to see an Ear Nose and Throat specialist?
Here is a validated questionnaire which further explores your child's sleep. Download it, complete it and take it to your general medical practitioner to discuss your next best step to improving your child's sleep.

What Does a Dental Practitioner Have to do with Sleep?
My name is Tess and I have over ten years of experience as an Oral Health Therapist and still work in a dental practice treating children. I have a special interest in early interceptive treatment of airway problems. The mouth is the gateway to the body and we can identify a multitude of health problems when we examine a persons mouth. In children, I routinely screen for enlarged tonsils which can contribute to breathing problems, speech problems, swallowing problems and orthodontic problems. In my clinic in Adelaide, South Australia, I regularly team up with orthodontists to address problems with the muscles of the mouth and face. If you consider for a second, some basic anatomy. The roof of the mouth is the same bone as the floor of the nose. When the mouth doesn’t grow properly, it affects airflow resistance through the nose, i.e how well we can nasal breathe. Nasal breathing has a multitude of benefits to overall health. Chronic mouth breathing should never be overlooked. An underdeveloped palate also means the tongue has less space which can also contribute to functional problems. I see these problems manifest as poor sleep quality, eating and speech difficulties and sometimes face and jaw pain. I work with adults and children in my private myofunctional therapy clinic to address these problems. I see many adults with sleep and jaw pain issues so I am really passionate about early intervention. I have a special interest in sleep and treating problems early. After working with clients who are travelling at great distances, I decided to develop this online program to reach more people. I have people contacting me from around the world for an online consultation. I have put together a program with information, tools and resources to get results. A tried and tested approach.
Why Should You Invest in Better Sleep?
Let me start with a question. How do you feel after a night without sleep. Do you feel drained, lethargic, moody? Do you reach for the sugary or high carb snacks? Do you complete your best work? Poor sleep costs the economy $14.4 billion each year. It is estimated that 1 in 10 Australians have a sleep disorder that can have a serious effect on their health, wellbeing, safety and productivity. It makes sense to address sleep disordered breathing early. Our children need to focus at school to learn and grow to their full potential.
The way we breathe can also affect how our face and jaws grow. There is a phenomenon called the ‘functional matrix theory’ in orthodontics that attributes proper growth to proper function. Our genetics provide the code but it is our environment and our movement patterns that affect the expression of those genes, i.e. how well we grow. Did you know that 40-60% of children with an airway problem also have an orthodontic problem. Did you know that the biggest phase of your child’s facial growth is the first 3-5 years of life. We can’t always avoid orthodontic treatment. However, we can do our best to provide the right stimulus to grow. These things include, first and foremost, nasal breathing (day and night), natural closed resting lip seal, tongue lightly suctioned to the roof of the mouth and swallowing correctly. Proper chewing and a hard diet also assist in developing strong jaws. Read more about this in blogs Growth Impact and Love Your Orthodontist
